Spotlight on the Seagull Informative Spin Board in Margate: An Interactive Community Art Installation by Because Creative in Margate

Here at Because Creative, we’re passionate about designing, producing, and installing unique, high-quality creative solutions. In 2021, we designed, produced and installed a Seagull Spin-Wheel, Information Board and 11 decorated wooden seagullls for The Margate Seagull Project. This was a fantastic example of what we do best: bringing community-centred art installations to life. This interactive informative spin board was located at Dreamland Margate and was created in collaboration with Hannah Warner Creative (www.hannahwarner.co.uk). The project invited residents of Margate and visitors to Dreamland to engage with the art and learn more about the community groups that Dreamland support.

The Concept: Community Art with a Purpose

The Margate Seagull Project was designed to celebrate and inform the public about the community groups that Dreamland work with; Kent Association for the Blind, Margate Women’s Institute, The BeYou Project (part of Porchlight charity), People Dem Collective, UK Creative Festival, Creative Foundation, Arts Education Exchange, Resort Studios, Rise Up. Clean Up. Margate. We invited the groups to decorate their own seagull, which were installed across the park as part of the seagull-themed art trail.

How We Brought the Seagull Spin-Wheel to Life

1. Design
   In collaboration with Hannah Warner Creative, our design studio worked to transform initial ideas into high-quality visuals and renderings. We created a design that is not only visually appealing but also functional, enabling easy interaction with the spin-wheel. Our spec drawings laid out every detail, from the layout to the materials, ensuring that the board would withstand outdoor conditions while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.

2. Production
   The next step was production, where we leveraged our in-house, high-tech machinery and a range of materials to craft the spin board. Wood and vinyl were chosen for their durability and compatibility with the outdoor setting, while our state-of-the-art spray booth gave the piece a vibrant, weather-resistant finish. Every element was built to exact specifications, ensuring that the final product matched our vision and met the high standards we set for ourselves.

3. Installation
   Finally, our installation team carefully positioned the spin board at Dreamland Margate. As always, we prioritised safety, providing all necessary paperwork and working at times that minimised disruption to the area. We’re proud to say that our installation process is seamless and respectful of the surrounding environment, allowing us to bring art to public spaces in a responsible way.
