Creating the Tatcha ‘Forest Awakening’ London Pop-Up Shop Experience in Covent Garden
At Because Creative, we had the pleasure of bringing a unique, nature-inspired experience to life for the launch of Tatcha’s ‘Forest of Awakening’ skincare collection. In collaboration with Space NK and Backlash, we designed and produced an 11-day experiential London pop-up shop in Covent Garden, London, inspired by Japan’s serene Hinoki forests and the art of shinrin-yoku, or "forest bathing."
The Journey Begins: London Pop-Up Shop ‘The Garden of Tranquility’
The immersive journey started in a custom-built greenhouse called ‘The Garden of Tranquility.’ Visitors stepped into an 18 x 6m space filled with greenery and calming natural elements. Designed to evoke the serenity of a Japanese forest, this environment set the tone for a sensory experience that embraced Tatcha’s ethos of inner calm and beauty. Every detail, from the choice of plant life to the gentle lighting, was carefully curated to create a peaceful, immersive atmosphere.
Immersive 4D Forest Bathing Meditation
As visitors moved deeper into the London pop-up shop experience, they were invited to partake in a headphone-guided 4D meditation inspired by shinrin-yoku . This immersive forest-bathing meditation featured tranquil forest sounds, natural scents, and a guided relaxation session. This element of the pop-up gave visitors a firsthand feel of Tatcha’s dedication to holistic beauty, allowing them to pause, relax, and connect with nature.
Exploring the ‘Room of Wa’ Retail Space
After the meditation experience in our London pop-up shop, visitors entered the ‘Room of Wa’—a tranquil, minimalist retail space where they could trial and purchase products from the ‘Forest of Awakening’ collection. This area was designed with calm, harmonious aesthetics in mind, creating a seamless transition from the meditative experience to the retail environment. Inspired by traditional Japanese design principles, the Room of Wa embodied simplicity and balance, emphasising the beauty of natural elements within the shopping experience.
Digital Innovation with an Augmented Reality Living Wall
The external living wall outside the London pop-up shop featured an innovative augmented reality (AR - implemented by Backlash) experience. Visitors could use their smartphones to watch the wall come to life, with digital animations of Japanese flowers and birds, adding an extra layer of interaction to the already sensory-rich environment. This AR feature was designed to connect with Tatcha’s narrative of nature and mindfulness, allowing visitors to see and feel the beauty of Japan’s flora in the heart of London.
A New Standard in Experiential Retail
This pop-up allowed us to push the boundaries of experiential retail design, creating an environment that blended natural beauty with cutting-edge technology to fully immerse visitors in the world of Tatcha’s new collection. The result was a memorable, multi-sensory experience that not only introduced the Forest of Awakening collection but also underscored Tatcha’s commitment to harmony, nature, and well-being.
